The Hunger Games takes place in the future North America, now called Panem. Panem is ruled by the Capitol, which rules over 12 districts. The book is told by Katniss Everdeen, a strong, but caring young girl, who is determined to take care of her family no matter what after a mining accident kills her father. Shortly after her father’s death she befriends Gale, a boy who is also trying to provide for his family after his father died in the same mining accident.
The book is centered around the Hunger Games, the Capitol’s way of reminding all of the districts of his power, and what would happen should they choose to rebel against the Capitol. The Hunger games take two tributes (a boy and a girl, ages twelve to eighteen), from each district, to compete to the death in the Hunger Games. Katniss’ whole world changes when her sister, Prim, is chosen from the thousands of people in the reaping. Katniss quickly decides that she has to take Prim’s place, and volunteers for the games instead. This then joins her, in ways she could never imagine, to a boy named Peeta, who is the boy tribute from twelve. Through the twist and turn of events in the games, Katniss has to defeat the hardest aspect of the games: surviving and staying true to yourself.
The Hunger Games is a truly fantastic book by Suzanne Collins. It spent twenty two weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List. Suzanne Collins makes the world so unbelievably mesmerizing that one may find hard to put the book down. The book is full of unexpected twists and turns that one may even feel adrenaline rushes, while reading the it from all the excitement contained within its pages. It is truly IMPOSSIBLE to get bored once you feel you are fighting for your life right next to Katniss. Katniss and all the other characters are so relatable and real that is makes them easy to fall in love and sympathize with. This book is quick read, especially for those who find themselves immersed in Panem and the Hunger Games.
