Imagine yourself downtown sipping premium roast coffee and being serenaded by contemporary jazz music. Across from you are your hip new friends who are showing you the ins-and-outs of their city, and they are eager to introduce you to their environment. You could be in a number of amazing cities that the U.S. has to offer, but in this case you’re in Portland, Oregon.
The setting of the IFC series Portlandia, the City of Roses, is the hometown of filmmaker Gus Van Sant and of musical groups such as The Shins, The Decemberists, Modest Mouse, and the late Elliott Smith. There’s no doubt that Portland has created a number of talented people. With all of these creative people and amazing culture, it is also no wonder that this city is the muse for Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen’s (cast member on Saturday Night Live) show.
Each episode consists of little stories that Carrie and Fred develop, based on the what they see around Portland. For example, when Fred was visiting Portland, he passed a feminist bookstore. There was no doubt in his mind that he could create a funny storyline around this unique shop.
They have had guests on the show including Kyle MacLachlan, Jeff Goldblum, Tim Robbins, Andy Samberg, and Amber Tamblyn, as well as musicians Steve Jones, Johnny Marr, and Eddie Vedder. The second season of Portlandia premiered on January 6th and continues to make viewers laugh and want to visit the city of Portland. You can tune in every Friday at 10|9c on the Independent Film Channel (IFC) to catch this funny and charming show!
